Ecopayments and Deforestation in Costa Rica: A Nationwide Analysis of PSA’s Initial Years
نویسندگان
چکیده
We offer a nationwide analysis of the initial years of Costa Rica’s PSA program, which pioneered environmental-services payments and inspired similar initiatives. Our estimates of this program’s impact on deforestation, between 1997 and 2000, range from zero to one-fifth of 1% per year (i.e., deforestation is avoided on, at most, 2 out of every 1,000 enrolled hectares). The main explanation for such a low impact is an already low national deforestation rate. We also consider the effect of enrollment. Predicted deforestation on enrolled versus nonenrolled hectares, and matching analyses suggest an enrollment bias toward lower clearing threat. Enrolling land facing higher threat could raise payments’ impact on deforestation. (JEL Q24, Q28)

“It’s Practically a Must”: Neoliberal Reasons for Foreign Language Learning
This qualitative study analyzes the reasons of college students for learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in Costa Rica and the reasons of high school students for learning German as a foreign language (GFL) in the US. It asks to what extent the learners’ reasons align with or deviate from neoliberal discourses that commodify foreign languages. The analysis of 27 interviews in a US high ...

متن کاملDeforestation is Contagious Evidence of Spatial Interactions from Forest Clearing in Costa Rica
We estimate the effects of neighbors’ deforestation actions on individuals’ deforestation decisions in Costa Rica. To address simultaneity and the presence of spatially correlated unobservable factors, we instrument for neighboring deforestation using topographic and biological characteristics of neighboring parcels. We find evidence that neighboring deforestation significantly raises the proba...
متن کاملDeforestation in Costa Rica: A Quantitative Analysis Using Remote Sensing Imagery
Accurate estimates of forest cover and forest fragmentation are critical for developing countries such as Costa Rica, which holds four to five percent of the world’s plant and bird species. We estimated forest cover for Costa Rica using Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper satellite scenes acquired between 1986 and 1991. In 1991, 29 percent (ca 14,000 km2) of the land cover of Costa Rica was closed forest...

The degree at which tropical forests are exposed to human pressure is spatially dependent. Population density, proximity to roads, terrain slope, logging activities and land distribution projects are well known factors inducing deforestation and forest degradation in Latin America. Using expert knowledge to weight these threat factors and a Geographical Information System for spatial modeling, ...
